Jerry Lee Lewis

Jerry Lee Lewis (nacido el 29 de septiembre de 1935) es un pianista y cantante pionero del rock and roll estadounidense. En 1986 formó parte del primer grupo incluido en el Salón de la Fama del Rock. En el 2003 la Revista Rolling Stone lo colocó en el puesto 24 de los mejores músicos del siglo.

BIOGRAFÍA

Primeros años:

Comenzó a tocar el piano en su juventud junto a sus primos, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. Debido al talento mostrado por el niño sus padres, hipotecaron su granja para comprale un piano. Influenciado por la música popular entonces emitida por la radio como The Louisiana Hayride Grand Ol' Opry mezcló los estilos de la época (Country, rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie y Gospel para crear el suyo propio.
El 29 de septiembre de 1949 realizó su primera aparición pública en un espectáculo montado por la compañía automotriz Ford en Ferriday en el cual interpretó Drinkin wine, spoo-dee-o-dee.

En el 1954 volvió a grabar haciendo versiones de canciones country como If I ever needed you y I don't hurt anymore. En sus primeros años tocó en clubes en Ferryday; Natchez, Mississippi y en Nashville, Tennessee. Intentó hacer una aparición en el show radial de música country Louisiana Hayride pero fue rechazado, los ejecutivos le dijeron que debía tocar la guitarra y no el piano.

En 1956, después de leer un artículo sobre Elvis Presley en una revista, viajó a Memphis para probar suerte grabando en Sun Records. En ese momento el dueño de la discográfica, Sam Phillips se encontraba en un viaje en Florida así que fue Jack Clement quien grabó sus primeras canciones en SUN: una versión de Crazy Arms de Ray Price y una composición propia llamada End of the Road. Ese mismo año tocó con Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins y Johnny Cash en el Million Dollar Quartet (Cuartero del millón de dólares).

Éxito:

Fue en 1957 cuando alcanzó el éxito con Whole Lotta Shakin' Going on. En un principio, Sam Phillips no estaba convencido de grabar esta canción por su contenido sexual y por ser típica de los barrios de negros. Finalmente aceptó y se grabó como lado B de It'll be Me.

En el Brooklyn Paramount Theatre de Nueva York, debió tocar antes de Chuck Berry. Como protesta llevó al show una botella de coca-cola llena de gasolina para incendiar el piano mientras tocaba Great Balls of Fire. Al terminar la canción le dijo a Chuck Berry Supera esto, negro. En el verano del 1958 Lewis era el músico con más éxito del momento, le siguieron otros dos éxitos, Breathless y High School Confidential, que lograron altas posiciones en las listas pero que fracasaron al conocerse el escándalo en la vida privada de Lewis.
